The purpose of the personal profile assignment is to bring all of those activities together and ask you to consider those reflections to determine whether your thoughts have lead you to acknowledge that some form of change is necessary. We have asked you to focus on your strengths to enable you to understand where, in a given situation, you may be able to use your strengths to change your actions and potentially improve the outcome.
Step 1 Your current skill level incorporating 360⁰ feedback
The purpose of this section of the assignment is to encourage you to develop greater insight into your current level of self-leadership skill development through an analysis of the feedback instruments used in this unit (questionnaires, as well as feedback from self and others). If you wish to refer to some of the specific details of these tools please use them as an Appendix.
To analyse data you might look for scores where there is some difference between your perceived skills and the strengths identified by your associates. Take the opportunity to explore these differences and seek, if possible, to reconcile or at least understand the source of the difference. You might also compare your score with the maximum score possible. Carefully consider the items in each scale. These items might help provide you with specific information that you can use for developing change goals.
The analysis of your strengths can focus explicitly on a specific area if you wish, or alternatively you may like to explore a couple of topics. You need to identify weaknesses that have the potential to undermine the achievement of your development area, as well as strengths you can use in order to improve the other skills areas. You do not need to analyse every tool that has been provided for you in this paper, however it is expected that you use at least 4 different instruments. (In this section, you need to incorporate links to Johari Window (week 1 readings); and an analysis of the actual instruments, self bias and bias from others, no more than 100 words on this. It is expected that you will use theory when identifying different forms of bias or weaknesses associated with self assessment instruments).
This analysis forms the foundation of the assignment and the learning being encouraged – 500 to 750 words (two to three double-lined spaced pages) is likely to be needed. At the end of this analysis you should have identified the specific area you would like to develop as well as the potential weaknesses you will need to address in your action plan; and, other strengths you could utilize to help with the achievement of your development area.
As you have been progressing through the unit, the ‘lightbulb’ activities (your personal blog), have encouraged you to reflect upon your practice. These are the reflections that you need to discuss at this point. Your reflections are likely to include your emotional reactions, your thoughts about it, and certainly your behaviour in the situation. Why did you react/feel/think this way? What assumptions is your behaviour/feelings based on? Are these beliefs valid? How do they limit your actions or actions of others? Are there better alternatives? How would you have liked to acted? (approximately 200 words)
Step 2: Reflecting on an area of strength and an area for improvement
Next, it is important to explore in detail an experience related to the topic area (area of development) that you have identified from your analysis. The purpose of the reflection is to deepen your analysis of your strengths and your area for development. For example, suppose your have ‘realistic optimism’ as an area of either strength or something that you would like to improve. Recall a past (or current) situation that illustrates your level of realistic optimism. Briefly describe the situation and/or task you were engaged in. This establishes the context and should be written concisely (no more than 5-6 sentences, or small paragraph). You do not have to provide the names of other people involved in the situation
This next section needs to be undertaken in detail. You need to reflect on how you reacted. Your reactions are likely to include your emotional reactions, your thoughts about it, and certainly your behaviour in the situation. Why did you react/feel/think this way? What assumptions is your behaviour/feelings based on? Are these beliefs valid? How do they limit your actions or actions of others? Are there better alternatives?
The final step in the process is to identify your learning. Your learning, when acknowledged explicitly, encourages you to continually use this learning to improve on your skill when faced with a similar situation in the future.
This section is likely to take approximately 500 to 750 words (two to three double-lined spaced pages).
Step: Self-leadership skills literature overview
In order to provide an understanding of your ‘new skill’ undertake a brief literature to provide you with a base to work from. The focus of this paper is on your skill development, so I do not recommend spending a lot of time on the foundation literature – 250 words (one double-lined spaced page) would be sufficient.
Step 4: Achieving personal and professional change (revisit weeks 6+ for this section)
Once you have clearly identified an area for improvement you will need to set a change goal. This should be framed such that it is consistent with goal setting theory i.e. your goal should be SMART specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-framed. Also consider the time it will take to achieve your goal. It is acceptable, initially at least, to frame both long-term and short-term goals. Goals need to be in line with the content covered in this unit.
You have identified what you need to change. You then need to focus is on how you might go about changing behaviour or belief or an emotional reaction. You can refer once again to the work that you have undertaken in the ‘packaged files’ throughout the unit to support your action plans. This is also a useful point to re-connect with the theory that you have introduced earlier to briefly explain why this is an important area for your career development.
Make sure your action plan is complete in that it identifies all of the critical activities necessary to achieve your goal. That is it is expected that you will incorporate the self leadership strategies identified in this unit in your action plan. That is, utilize thought, behaviour and emotion focused strategies (revisit week 2 learning resource file). Ensure you identify how you will overcome any potential threats (habits, self talk, etc) that may hinder your change program, as well as identify specifically how/when/what rewards you will incorporate; also how will you measure ‘success’.
You may like to use tables and dot points in order to describe your plans. This section is likely to take approximately 500 (two double-lined spaced pages).
Just as with the introduction all assignments, reports, papers, academic notes and so on should be effectively concluded. The conclusion draws together the main points of the paper in order to emphasise to the reader the importance of the views raised. Like the introduction, the conclusion does not need to be lengthy – a single paragraph is all that is necessary (e.g., approximately 200 words).
