Sociological Imagination Assignment
The purpose of this assignment is to stimulate your Sociological Imagination and encourage you to think about the main theoretical approaches in sociology. Pick ONE of the following question sets and write a Reaction Paper to answer the question of your choice.
1) What did Emile Durkheim mean by ‘anomie’? Do you think that this condition still exists in the contemporary world? How would you link the concept of ‘anomie’ to excessive consumption patterns, materialism and increased levels of depression in our capitalist society? Give examples and discuss them sociologically.
2) What did Max Weber mean by an ‘iron cage’? Do you believe that iron cages still exist in the contemporary world? How would you link the concept of ‘iron cage’ to computer technology, internet and cell phones in our capitalist society? Give examples to support your argument and discuss them sociologically.
3) What did Karl Marx mean by ‘alienation’? Do you think that this condition still exists in the contemporary world? How would you link the concept of ‘alienation’ to work conditions and technology in our capitalist society? Provide useful evidence and discuss it sociologically.
You can use the lecture notes (i will attach). You must use 3-4 external sources such as newspaper articles, journal articles, books, websites or photographs to support your arguments. Try attaching a graph and diagram that prove your argument to be right!!! You must provide citations in the text with the source identified in a bibliography or in footnotes. You must provide proper citation when you use our textbook as well. Direct quotations from any source should be put in quotation marks and cited. Paraphrasing, i.e., using someone else’s ideas but explaining them in your own words, without citation is also a form of plagiarism; therefore, proper citation must be provided.
