First, read “Chapter 3: The Body” from Jean Robertson and Craig McDaniel’s Themes of Contemporary Art (2010) and Sapphire’s novel, Push (1996), and poem “Wild Thing” (1992). The poem is available in audio mode here. We will also view Yoko Ono’s performance art, Cut Piece (1965) and Sue Coe’s painting, New Bedford Rape (1984).
Second, answer questions: Discuss how the representation of the human body and sexual violence in one of the literary texts (“Wild Thing” or Push) AND one of the art pieces (Cut Piece or New Bedford Rape) could be viewed as nontraditional, disturbing and/or potentially dangerous. What is the impact of that on the audience (reader/viewer)? How does the approach these texts take to the body relate to any of the different artistic approaches outlined in “Chapter 3: The Body”?
