(1) CHILDREN WHO ARE NOT BREASTFED Likely to have lower immune systems, making them prone to diseases". This has always been an interesting statement to me. Not to cause a debate but I’de be interested to see how this research is conducted. I ask because I was breastfed (myself including my 3 siblings) til 3 1/2. Out of the 4 of us I was in and out of the hospital since birth (micro-premie and cardiac defect). However, my mother’s dr told her that breastfeeding seemed to be the key to recovery after multiple surgies and hospitilizations. I was only able to breastfeed my middle child out of my 3. My middle one has a very rare blood/immune disorder, cyclic neutropenia, and her pediatrician would always recommend I continue breastfeeding her even while she was neutropenic (she could never figure out how to drink from a bottle and pumping never worked. I would down a mask and breastfeed her in an isolation room! Her vitals and neurtophil levels seemed to stabilize. So granted both instances had a genetic pre-disposition for being immuno-compromised it makes me wonder the what if’s of bf vs ff. I also have a friend who’s son has HRHS and esohageal atresia and a fistula between his esophagus and trachea who is breastfed and he was only on a g-tube for 4 months at birth! Makes you wonder how much his health is (surprisingly he’s great!) due to being breastfed.
