Abortion (argue both sides of issue)
Your term paper will focus on a contemporary problem or issue in our society. It is critical that you compellingly argue BOTH sides of the issue. The paper will be 6-8 pages long (not including the bibliography) and should present recent research material from several differentsources, such as journal articles, books, newspaper and magazine articles (be selective with newspaper and magazine articles, however) and internet sources. Do not cite Wikipedia. If you use Wikipedia, which I would not recommend, be sure to go to the first-hand sources and read and document that source instead. Additionally, no other encyclopedias – or our textbook – may be used as a source. Do not cite or use any related sources, such as about.com or some similar useless website. A paper that ONLY citeswebsites will have a tough time getting an A from me. You will need to visit a library and check out some books on your topic, or research some journal articles on your topic. For journal articles, try JSTOR; for full-fledged policy positions, try CQ researcher. Both of these are available from the comfort of your own home via CSN’s library. My point: good (SCHOLARLY/PEER-REVIEWED) research gets the grade. Putting it together with good writing gets a better grade. Following these and the rest of the directions gets the best grade. The paper will focus on three key components: First, what is the nature of the issue or controversy? Why is it an issue? Explain both sides of the issue, and why the issue is important to the American governmental process. Secondly, explain who the actors involved are: which government agencies are primarily responsible for policymaking? Which interest groups focus on the issue or controversy? Who else is involved? Remember, you MUST equally present both sides of the argument in a compelling way. Find the BEST arguments both sides have and persuasively present them in the paper. Topics to choose from: Immigration Reform Campaign Finance Gun Control Abortion Legalizing pot Affirmative Action Gay Rights/Marriage The Electoral College The Obama Healthcare Plan Legal Prostitution The paper needs to include references – both parenthetical and bibliographical (please use either MLA or Chicago style) and must be delivered in 12pt Times New Roman font, 1 inch margins all around, double spaced. Please note that a pastime of mine is catching those who choose to plagiarize their paper, and the results of that are generally not pleasant. I do, however, always catch at least one per semester. This paper is due Friday by 5pm as described in the syllabus. If you decide to turn the paper in late, please note that I deduct six points each day that the paper is late. Please upload the paper on Canvas or email to me.
